How I Grew, Harvested, and Trimmed a Thriving Sweet Basil Plant Indoors

Sweet Basil is one of the easiest and most rewarding basil varieties to grow indoors from seed. In this post, I show how my Sweet Basil grew from cotyledons and true leaves into a fast-growing indoor herb plant, how I repotted and trimmed it several times, and how I harvested 26 grams of fresh basil leaves. I also share what happens when basil is not pruned on time and how I later started shaping the plant into a small basil tree.

This basil variety grew fast, sprouted strong, and gave me more than I expected.

It’s the kind of plant that keeps growing—as long as you care for it.

It grows big, multiplies easily, and never seems to stop

These are the cotyledons.

The first true leaves were just beginning to appear.

The true leaves began to grow larger,

and new ones kept sprouting from the center.

I repotted it so it could grow in a bigger world.

It kept growing and growing.

I moved it to the studio, trimmed the leaves, and took some photos.

And it kept growing again.

It even started to split like twin pigtails.

I gave it another round of trimming.

Still… it just kept going.

Eventually, it grew enough to harvest.

I had enough to cook with.

The total harvest?

26 grams of sweet basil leaves.

And yes—it's still growing.

But when basil isn’t properly managed,

it leaves behind just a skeletal frame.

Originally, I planned to finish its cycle after seeing the flower spike.

But with so many basil varieties growing at once,

I neglected the sweet basil a little.

That said, all the other basil types have been cleared,

and now I’m shaping this one into a basil tree.
