🌸 Cattleya Orchid Potting Workshop at Sejong National Arboretum
Cattleya orchids are often called the “Queen of Orchids” because of their elegant flowers, fragrance, and vivid colors. In this post, I share my hands-on Cattleya orchid potting workshop experience at Sejong National Arboretum in Korea, where I learned how to remove sphagnum moss carefully, protect the roots, repot a Cattleya into a mini terracotta pot, and care for it with bright light, airflow, and proper watering.

“Queen of Orchids” Exhibition & Hands-On Planting Experience
Last week, I visited the Sejong National Arboretum again—one of my favorite places for plant-themed events.
This time, I participated in a special workshop titled “Companion Orchid Gardening”, held as part of the Cattleya Orchid Exhibition.
🌿 Planting Experience Setup: Cattleya Potting Time!
The session took place inside the indoor garden, in a beautifully prepared plant workshop area.
Each participant received a mini terracotta pot—a special No.2 mini size made just for Cattleyas!
Before planting, we listened to a short introduction from the representative of a local orchid farm who grows Cattleyas.
They explained various tips about growing Cattleyas and their care needs (which I’ll summarize below!).
Unfortunately, I forgot the exact name of the Cattleya variety I received 😅 Then we moved on to the highlight: potting or repotting our Cattleya orchids.
🌿 Potting the Cattleya
We gently removed the moss (sphagnum) from around the roots—taking extra care not to damage them.
Once cleaned, we placed the orchid into the new pot with a fresh growing medium. And that’s it! Done!
💡 How to Care for a Cattleya Orchid
Here’s a simple summary of the care tips shared during the session:
- ☀️ Keep in a bright spot, not full sun but well-lit
- 💨 Make sure the air circulates well
- 💧 Water thoroughly when the topsoil dries, ideally using a shower spray
- 🌱 Care for it like other common orchids—but don’t overwater

After the workshop, a wide variety of Cattleya orchids were available for purchase.
Even if you didn’t buy one, just browsing the gorgeous varieties was fun and inspiring!

Following the planting session, the instructor guided us through the Cattleya Orchid Exhibition, explaining several types and characteristics.
The scent of the flowers was absolutely amazing!
This Cattleya exhibition runs until February 9, 2025, so if you love orchids, I highly recommend visiting on a weekend.
