🌶️ Growing Peppers in an Apartment Balcony Garden: From Seed to Seedling (Part 1)
How I Started My Urban Pepper Garden with High-Germination Seeds
Looking to grow peppers in your small urban space? This post covers the start of a real-life balcony gardening journey, featuring seed germination, seedling trays, and LED grow light setups—all from a cozy apartment in Korea.
🧪 The Experiment: Germinating Pepper Seeds Indoors
Earlier this year, a plant enthusiast—let’s call her Gardener P—decided to go all-in on peppers for her balcony garden.
After several failed attempts with five different varieties of pepper seeds (including heirlooms), she decided to make a serious investment.
In February 2024, she purchased a premium hybrid pepper seed called “2024 Cal-Tan All-Round”—and everything changed from there.
🌱 Step 1: Pre-Soaking and Water Germination
- The seeds were soaked in water for over 24 hours to trigger pre-germination.
- After soaking, the seeds were transferred into a mesh pouch for water germination at around 30°C and 99% humidity.
🔥 +3 Days: Germination Success!
By Day 3, nearly all the Cal-Tan All-Round seeds had successfully germinated—showing clear white roots.
Meanwhile, the other five pepper varieties still showed zero signs of sprouting.
This proves that quality seeds matter, and that maintaining the right temperature and humidity can make or break your indoor seed-starting success.
🧤 Step 2: Transplanting to Seedling Tray
With roots visible, it was time to transplant the germinated seeds into soil.
- We used a 40-cell seedling tray (prepared over 2 years in advance!)
- Each seed was planted gently with tweezers, just deep enough to be barely covered with topsoil. Too deep = delayed sprouting.
- The goal was to make sure the tiny root adhered well to the soil surface.
💡 Step 3: Lighting and Growth Monitoring
A plant LED grow light was installed above the tray to ensure proper light exposure.
Due to space limitations, only a portion of the tray could benefit from the lighting. Still, it was enough to kickstart the process.
🌿 +8 Days: First Sprouts Appear!
The first visible green sprout emerged 8 days after transplanting—an exciting moment in any gardening journey!
🍃 +15 Days: True Leaves Develop
Two weeks in, the seedlings began to develop true leaves—a strong indicator of healthy growth.
Gardener P proudly attributes the success to quality seeds + consistent lighting.

🌱 Beyond Peppers: What’s Next?
Gardener P isn’t just stopping at peppers. She’s currently experimenting with pineapple, Shine Muscat grapes, and more—all indoors.
I, meanwhile, am happily waiting for harvest season. 😄
